Certified Organic Vineyard, Bannockburn New Zealand
Calvert Pinot Noir 2021
A New Zealand wine with great personality, borne of small things done beautifully - one vineyard, one variety, one wine.
Calvert is a careful balance of sustainable production and open spaces - an approach that considers future generations.
Calvert is a Central Otago Pinot Noir hand-crafted from grapes grown on it's Felton Road - Bannockburn vineyard. The land has been owned by the Calvert family since 1989.
The Calvert wine has been made with the simple intention of showcasing the vineyard site. The soil, the vines, and the characteristics we obtain from our Bannockburn sub-region are most important to the process. We intervene as little as possible in the winemaking to ensure the vineyard characteristics remain at the forefront of the wine.
The 2021 Calvert Pinot Noir is dark ruby red in colour.
The nose is dominated by savoury characters of earthiness, black Doris plum, blackberry compote, and cardamom spices.
This leads to a wine with silky textured smooth tannins.
The earthiness thread becomes the backbone of the palate and is complemented by the rounded, brooding dark fruit characters and spiciness creating a luscious lingering mouth feel.
2021 is a cooler seasoned slower ripening vintage for the Calvert vineyard resulting in a solid wine with great cellaring potential.
Calvert wine is made in the vineyard:

Drinking Window: 2024 - 2032
Dark cherry, milk chocolate, star anise, dried herbs, rosehip and a touch of earth and graphite. There's plenty of fruit but this isn't a fruity wine, rather it’s savoury and complex with many layers to explore on the smooth, supple palate. Good fruit concentration and sandy tannins. A harmonious, calm wine, all nicely together but with a sense of place and character. Organic.

The Real Review
94/100 Points
Perfumed wholebunch, stemmy, aromatic, quite complex. Energetic fruit with floral nuances over juicy, ripe fruit which enters red and finishes black. Good concentration and quite plush; an accessible and user-friendly style which nonetheless has density to benefit from ageing 17 NOV 2024

Outstanding

Fabulous bouquet driven by ripeness, youth and vibrancy. Scents of ripe concentrated black cherry cushioned against a savoury-dried-herb quality giving this wine a sense of place. Other aromas include clove and baking spices of barrel, dried earth and black raspberry compote. Complex and youthful. On the palate a textured, concentrated and luscious wine with textures from polished tannins and backbone of acidity, the concentration of fruits absorb the barrel flavours well and all tannins begin to dissolve slowly on the palate. Excellent length and power. Best drinking from likely 2026 through 2036+ if stored well.

Te Whenua Issue no 7 April 2024
Te Whenua’s 2024 Central Otago PN tasting 21-22 March 2024
At the Te Whenua tasting, 20 wines gained selection to The List. That is a success rate of roughly 33 per cent, the most of any pinot region so far. Of the 20, 12 were from the 2022 vintage. Also worth noting: the majority of the wines on The List were made with fruit farmed on certified organic vineyards. Central Otago leads the country in having close to 30 per cent of its vineyard area certified organic.
