Certified Organic Vineyard, Bannockburn New Zealand
Calvert Pinot Noir 2019
A New Zealand wine with great personality, borne of small things done beautifully - one vineyard, one variety, one wine.
Calvert is a Central Otago Pinot Noir hand-crafted from grapes grown on it's Felton Road - Bannockburn vineyard. The land has been owned by the Calvert family since 1989.
The Calvert wine has been made with the simple intention of showcasing the vineyard site. The soil, the vines and the characteristics we obtain from our Bannockburn sub-region are most important to the process. We intervene as little as possible in the winemaking to ensure the vineyard characteristics remain at the forefront of the wine.
Enticing savoury forest floor notes on the nose lead into dark plum, briar rose and cinnamon spice characters. Calvert is an elegant, textural, full bodied wine complimented by a smooth tannic backbone.
Calvert wine is made in the vineyard:
- Using organically grown grapes of clones 115 and 10/5 from rows 28-33 of the Calvert vineyard, our 2.3 tonnes of Pinot Noir was hand-harvested on 8th April 2019
- The fermentation included 25% whole bunch and was completed using indigenous yeast
- The 2019 was matured in 30% new French oak barrels for 14 months before bottling without fining or filtration in July 2020
- Only 1941 bottles made. (323 x 6 packs)
- Alcohol 13%, pH 3.65, TA 5.3g/L
Calvert 2018 Pinot Noir...Brand new to the market this youthful, savoury, ripe and very expressive wine showcases aromas of dried raspberry, dark red apple skin and cherry; there’s a fine wild-dried-herb savoury core then spicy oak and sweet toasty wood flavours. Tense, youthful and dry with firm chalky tannins and acidity to match. Additional flavours of dried flowers and a strong seam of crushed stone minerality emerge after twenty minutes in glass. Still on its journey to full harmony. Best drinking from 2021 through 2027+.
94/100 points - Excellent
First release of a new wine from an established vineyard on Felton Road that has supplied grapes to several producers including Felton Road, Craggy Range and Pyramid Valley. Elegant, supple pinot noir with cherry, wild thyme, spice, anise, vanilla and savoury fresh herb flavours. Medium-bodied red with a smooth texture. A deliciously drinkable wine with subtle power. Certainly one to watch.
